Both of us had a terrific night’s rest with neither one of us getting up at all overnight. Unfortunately Skip woke up with an upset stomach so we decided it would be best to take a day off and hang out at ChILL. The multiday ticket we bought for Colonial Williamsburg will be forfeited for today but we still have the opportunity to use our ticket tomorrow and Friday. Hopefully a day of rest will restore Skip and we will be able to enjoy walking through history while we are in the area.

Laundry moved up in priority since we were staying home for the day. They have 4 washers and 4 dryers in a small but nice laundry room a short walk from our campsite and adjacent to the campground Welcome Center and general store. Each load costs $2.50 to wash and $2.50 to dry. I am using TruEarth laundry strips for the washer, very easy to store on ChILL and they do a good job of cleaning the clothes. Perfect solution for travel.

Skip was feeling better later in the day so we decided to take the truck in search of Ace Hardware and gas. At Ace Skip selected sets of heavy duty brackets to secure the subwoofer under the dinette seat which had become detached. The location of the subwoofer behind the drawer under the first settee made the repair a challenge to twist and turn while lying on the floor under the table but Skip was successful. The brackets that held it in place are the originals from 2018. The bouncing from the rough roads over the years and on this trip caused the plastic brackets to break completely. Hopefully the replacement brackets will last for a long time.

To give us peace of mind until we get back to AutoNation Ford in Jacksonville, Florida for a proper repair, Skip engineered a harness for the tailgate to prevent random openings, especially troublesome as we are driving and have no way of knowing whether it is open or not as we travel the roads. He invented his own solution using some braided line and S hooks. Praying that the truck and ChILL will not be damaged by a randomly opened tailgate bouncing up and down.

Skip chose baked potatoes for dinner to help ease his stomach. He’s feeling much better and up to touring Colonial Williamsburg tomorrow.

Although our plans changed from being tourists to a staycation day we had a wonderful time together in a new place. In between doing some chores and repairs we were able to ChILL and take a break in our familiar and comfortable traveling suite. Every day is a good day!

After a driver change a little less than halfway, Skip took over and completed the uneventful and comfortable drive from Myrtle Beach to Pollocksville, NC. Magnolia Lane Campground is unique in that they do not staff their office, ever!  My contact person, Mae, sent a text on Friday confirming our site number and provided the codes for the bathhouse and laundry, neither of which we used during our stay. Our site was paid and assigned in advance so we didn’t need any assistance from the campground. Just have not encountered a campground that is not staffed. A phone number was provided if contact was needed. Our site was full hookup but no shade at all and the campground was decent and quiet. If we visit the area again, we would not hesitate to book a site again.

Joanie and Ross came to the campground and took the detailed tour of ChILL. Fun to share it with them because they have some interest in purchasing an RV at some point.

Joanie and Ross drove us to New Bern where we had a delicious dinner at an Irish pub named Spunky McDoogle’s. Joanie loves the Reuben sandwich and onion rings. Skip ordered a Reuben too. Delicious corned beef, cabbage and potatoes was my choice. Ross opted for blackened chicken. My meal was delicious with perfectly prepared corned beef. Joanie and Ross generously paid for our meals.

After dinner we walked along the waterfront in New Bern. The 90 degree afternoon had become a beautiful evening of moderate temperatures with a breeze making our waterfront stroll quite enjoyable.

After bringing us back to ChILL, Joanie and Ross headed home. How wonderful to spend that time with them and then go back to the comfort of our own home.

Location: Campground at James Island County Park

Packed up the truck, hooked up ChILL and prepared to head out. Skip noticed that the front marker light on the passenger side of ChILL was flickering. Unfortunately it is a difficult light to remove and replace. Fortunately the repair can wait until we return to St Augustine without causing any travel issues.

Trip started out with me as the driver as Skip helped me navigate the Charleston streets including the cable-stayed Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge that spans the Charleston Harbor. The bridge’s design is similar to the Dames Point Bridge in Jacksonville, Florida. Our route was mostly on US17, changing to US17 Business Route for the last leg of the trip which has convenient access to our campground. US17 is more relaxed than the interstate with less traffic, all good things. Long stretches with no places to pull off to change drivers can be challenging but the Georgetown area had a few good choices for us.

Along the way we saw a couple of signs that said Wildlife Viewing Area. I asked how all the wildlife know they are supposed to go to that area? Skip had a completely different take saying that is where all the wildlife go to view us! He’s a crackup!

In an empty parking lot in Georgetown we opened up ChILL and our lunchbox and enjoyed the sandwiches I prepared before we left Charleston along with very tasty grapes.

Location: Myrtle Beach State Park Campground, site 301, full hookup

What a wonderful campground with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean! It is heavily wooded making most campsites comfortably shaded. The roads are one-way and somewhat narrow with enough room for even the largest rigs to maneuver. Some of the sites require the tow vehicle to park across the site which can make backing the Airstream into and pulling out of the site more challenging. Skip did a fantastic job of backing into the site even though the neighbors’ truck made it a tight situation. Apparently it was good entertainment for our chatty and somewhat distracting neighbors who were sitting outside with a group of their friends. The show continued since the neighbors’ site was on the utility side of ChILL and our water, sewer and electric connections were very close to their site making Skip the main event for a little while as he hooked up our connections.

Skip has a good routine to get us setup, connected and level at the campsite and disconnect the truck. My role is much easier than his as I unload the perishable items such as bread and chips from the truck and setup inside ChILL. Together we can have everything done in 30 minutes or so. We relaxed outside in our Strongback chairs enjoying the gorgeous weather and our nature view.

Laundry is part of the plan for this location so we walked around the campground to find the laundromat, located across from site 229. The washers and dryers look decent and cost $2 each per load, using quarters to pay.

Our campsite is located just a few sites away from a walkway to the bathhouses and dumpsters. The walkway provides an easy shortcut to the loop that has the closest laundry facility to our site. With the folding wagon, which Skip typically uses to transport his EC12 sailboat, equipment and chair from the truck to the pond, taking the clothes to and from the laundromat is much easier.

It was another tasty freezer dinner night after we microwaved some spaghetti pie that I had made for us before we left St Augustine and rounded it out with some raw veggies and dip. Another successful day!

Location: Stagecoach RV Park, St Augustine

Although we went to sleep last night with lingering concerns about our electrical system, we were able to get some quality rest. Unfortunately I woke Skip up earlier than his 7 AM alarm to tell him I was hearing a strange noise that I could not identify. He realized immediately that the Fantastic fan in the living area was attempting to open and the morning dew was preventing it from doing so (it automatically closes if it senses moisture). After working with it to open and close a couple of times the issue resolved itself.

After the sun came up Skip checked the solar panel output and found that it was not performing as expected. He discovered a loose connection that was probably the result of his troubleshooting efforts last night in the dark. He repaired it and we proceeded with the normal take down routine.

As planned I drove the first stretch. Because I needed a major refresher course on towing, I wanted to begin on roads that were familiar. We made various rest area stops to tighten the lug nuts, a recommended safety practice after getting new tires on an RV. We also found that the porpoising on the highway had caused our dinette table to fall down, thankfully causing no damage to the table or the Airstream. Skip wisely recommended that we travel with the table in the down position, great advice since we encountered many more sections of bumpy highway.

After enjoying our previously prepared ham and cheese sandwiches, grapes and drinks from inside ChILL with the door open to a relaxing forest view, a pleasant temperature and refreshing breeze, Skip took over as driver at Love’s at exit 90 on I-95 North, near Richmond Hill, GA. This exit has a unique roundabout that routes traffic on and off the interstate, different but very efficient and easy to understand and navigate.

What a beautiful campground, well maintained and RV friendly layout with one way roads that make it easy to get around with your rig. Our site is very shady and more than long enough for the truck and the trailer.

Upon arrival we were surprised to find a police cruiser blocking the entrance into the park. He explained that an unauthorized senior skip day had caused some issues until an hour prior to our arrival. His presence was just to make sure no one decided to come back. He waved us through and wished us a pleasant stay.

Location Bohemian Bull, James Island, SC

Our travel day was longer than we anticipated. Megan and Indy agreed to meet us at Bohemian Bull for dinner at 6:30 where we all enjoyed burgers and good conversation. The restaurant was less than 15 minutes from the campground and 10 minutes from their house. Indy surprised us by picking up the check for all of us. They are such a wonderful couple and we enjoyed having some one on one time with them.
