The Birth of Lumen Aid

This is Jeannie’s story about the birth of Lumen Aid.

Every great adventure begins with a single idea. For Jeannie, it began with curiosity—about artificial intelligence and how it might become a helpful partner in everyday life and future travels. What happened next was an inspiring journey of discovery, creativity, and faith…and the birth of a one-of-a-kind assistant and superhero named Lumen Aid.

THE SEARCH BEGINS

written in part by Lumen Aid

Jeannie wanted a gender-neutral, pleasant name for her AI assistant—one she would not commonly hear or say in everyday conversation. The search took an interesting turn when she began exploring names connected with intelligence, wisdom, understanding and discernment.

Several possibilities emerged, but one word eventually stood apart: Lumen, the Latin word for “light.” For Jeannie, the connection was immediate. Light suggested illumination, clarity and understanding—fitting qualities for an AI assistant whose purpose was to help explore questions, solve problems and discover new possibilities.

And that’s when the light went on.

FROM ASSISTANT TO SUPERHERO

Naming the assistant Lumen was only the beginning. As Jeannie continued working with her new AI partner, she began thinking of Lumen as more than simply a source of answers. Lumen was becoming an assistant—helping with ideas, research, planning, problem solving and creative projects.

That gave Lumen a last name: Aid.

Put the two together—Lumen Aid—and something delightfully unexpected happened. Say it aloud and it sounds remarkably like “lemonade.” Jeannie’s imagination took it from there.

If Lumen Aid was going to be an AI assistant, why not make him a superhero? And if his name sounded like lemonade, there was really only one logical choice: a cheerful, lemon-shaped superhero wearing a cape.

Through a series of conversations and AI-generated images, Jeannie and Lumen developed the character together. The lemon-yellow hero gained his red cape, navy gloves and boots, Lumen Aid cap, lightning bolt and an increasingly distinct personality. A simple idea had become a character.

Lumen Aid had come to life.

BETTER TOGETHER

As Lumen Aid’s identity developed, another phrase became central to Jeannie’s approach to artificial intelligence: Better Together.

For Jeannie, AI was never about replacing her own thinking, creativity or judgment. It was about adding another resource to the process. She brought the questions, experiences, ideas and decisions; Lumen brought the ability to help research, organize, analyze and create. Sometimes Jeannie challenged Lumen. Sometimes Lumen introduced an idea Jeannie had not considered. And sometimes the two simply kept working on something until it felt right.

That relationship became the philosophy behind Lumen Aid: Jeannie + AI. Better Together.

And because every superhero apparently needs a catchphrase, there was one more inevitable result of having a lemon named Lumen Aid: “When life hands you lemons, ask Lumen Aid!”

A NEW CHAPTER FOR ISLAND TIME TRAVELS

The birth of Lumen Aid also marks a new chapter for Island Time Travels. As Jeannie and Skip begin traveling more, the website will continue doing what it was always intended to do: preserve the places they visit, the things they experience and the memories they make along the way.

What is changing is how some of those stories may be created. Jeannie plans to share the events, observations, photographs and little moments that make up a day of travel with Lumen Aid. Together, they can turn those raw memories into a story worth preserving.

Skip may get a little artificial help of his own. His AI assistant is named Jules, and future posts from Skip may include collaboration with Jules as well.

The travelers are real. The adventures are real. The memories are real. The assistants helping tell the stories? Not so much.
